About Me

Meet Lani

As a licensed psychoanalyst, my goal is to create a supportive and accepting environment where you can talk freely about all of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Having personally benefitted from psychoanalysis, I have experienced firsthand how transformative it can be. I trained as a psychoanalyst so that I could provide a therapeutic emotional experience and empower others to enact lasting change in their own lives. I graduated with a Masters in Psychoanalysis from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis and completed my clinical training at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies in New York City. I’m a member of the Women’s Mental Health Consortium, the American Psychological Association’s Division 39, the Society for Modern Analysts, and the Clinician’s Collective. I see clients in my private practice in the Flatiron/Gramercy area of New York City.

What It’s Like to Work with Me

All too often in our lives, we do not feel seen, heard, or understood by others. Others that are close to us see us through the lens of who we are to them, which is not always an accurate reflection of who we really are. A therapist can be a more attuned listener because she’s interested in and curious about what it is that you think, feel and want. When people feel understood, interesting things can happen. They are better able to feel connected with themselves and their emotions, can create healthier relationships and live more meaningful, satisfying lives.

My approach is exploratory, designed to help you explore possibilities, gain new insights and be empowered to take control of your own life. I work collaboratively with you to think through decisions as you navigate life’s challenges but I believe that you are the best judge of what choices are right for you and your life. Our sessions will be conversational and dialogue driven; you can talk about any area of your life or say whatever comes to your mind, even if it doesn’t seem relevant.

Psychoanalysis is a longer term therapy. Real, lasting change doesn’t happen overnight. We have thought and behavior patterns deeply engrained in us that are reinforced over our lifetime. It can take time to get the results you want. That being said, you don’t have to spend your life in therapy. The amount of time and effort you want to put into therapy is a personal choice and varies widely from person to person.

Everything depends on what we would rather do than change. - Adam Phillips
